down, but not out...

Life proving a bit crinkly at the moment. Without the whole story we were TURNED DOWN at Panel for fostering last week. This simply never happens, after 10 months preparation, and endless interviews it should be a technicality. But, for us, there was a row over TVs and playstations in bedrooms, and they didn't think we were fit to be considered without MUCH more training! Incidentally, we don't do TVs in bedrooms, and the fostering panel felt very strongly that our age range of boy children (4years old to 10years old) must have these things in their room.....We now no longer wish to foster and have withdrawn our application, but after all that training and trouble it seems a bit of a shame.

Went to Sheffield (actually a beautiful place called Eyam) for dinner last night, but it has left me a bit weary at work today. Its a long way to go for a mediocre feed, but the company was excellent!

Puppies have grown tall enough to steal shoes off the counter top, and therefore we have even less un-nibbled shoes in the house than yesterday

Wait, wait, did I read correctly? They won't let you foster children because there won't be a TV/game system in their bedrooms? Seriously? Shouldn't that be a GOOD thing?? Shouldn't the kids be outside playing with the dogs or inside reading on a rainy day?

I'm sorry that your plans to do something truly wonderful for kids fell through because of something this crazy and trivial. What a shame!

Glad to hear the doggies are doing well, though :-)

Well, that has always been our position, social services seem to have been happy with that, but at the last moment the Panel objected strenuously to this, saying it was unyielding, unkind and inappropriate! We would not budge, as we believe there is no place for entertainment in a bedroom - we live in a big house, there's bags of rooms downstairs, and they were appalled that we would not agree to a foster child shutting himself in his bedroom. I know its hard to believe, I still can't believe it, and it happened to me!!!!!!!

We truly live in a world gone mad. You two have brought up two of the nicest and well balanced boys that it has ever been our pleasure to meet.

One decent boy might have been lucky but I'm afraid to say that two smacks of decent parenting.

My advice is divorce and go on the dole, with one or possibly even both of you becoming registered junkies. The local authorities will be knocking your door down to look after children. Mrs B and I are almost speechless, but sadly not surprised. I may have to start a badly written but well intentioned BlackLOG campaign against authority....

Dear Mr & Mrs B, thank you for your very kind words. I now believe that your scenario is closer to reality than our farm home/dogs/horses/strict boundaries/time and love. We still feel peculiar about being turned down. Obviously you can sign us up to a campaign against authority, but can we begin with preventing Gordon from selling any more of the family silver? Not content with shovelling out the gold at the bottom of the market he's determined that we shall live within an empty shell of a nation...

"unkind" not to have TV and Playstations in bedrooms? How on earth did previous generations grow up so deprived? I suppose next they'll require all bedrooms to be equipped with laptops, too.
